SABENA – (SociétéAnonyme Belge d’Exploitation de la Navigation Aérienne, NV). (SN/SAB)

Brussels-National

SABENA leased two Series 510EDs from European Air Charter Ltd through Delta Air Transport NV which entered service on 26th March 1995 on scheduled routes from Brussels to Amsterdam, Bordeaux, Edinburgh and Glasgow in an all tourist 94 seat passenger configuration. This was later reduced to 84. Later in the summer Strasbourg replaced Bordeaux as a destination. This contract finally ended with the return of the last aircraft on 30th June 1996. Full details of all the leases are shown below but at peak three aircraft were in operation at any one time. In a similar arrangement with British World Airlines Ltd, a Series 520FN and a Series 518FG were leased from 26th March 1995 until 29th April 1996 and again from 21st May to 1st June 1996. These aircraft initially operated schedules from Brussels to Copenhagen, Bordeaux and Marseille but eventually were exclusively operated on the Copenhagen schedules. Once again, full details of the leases are shown below. In 1998 an arrangement was made with Nationwide Air (Pty) Ltd to code share that company’s domestic flights from Cape Town, George and Durban to connect with SABENA’s three weekly flights from Johannesburg to Brussels. The One-Elevens used were initially painted with both company’s titles but were later amended to carry small SABENA titles on the lower forward fuselage. Frequencies from Brussels to Johannesburg were increased to daily from the end of March 1999. SABENA eventually withdrew its South African schedules in early 2001 and the arrangement with Nationwide came to an end.
